In Camera

John and Suki were having a whale of a time.

They were all togged up with parachutes and about to jump out at 6,000 feet for their fiftieth jump. What a blast!

They had their sports camera in the plane and were leaning out the open door of the aircraft filming.

Then Suki dropped it.

“Oh, Shiiit!” she cried.

The camera spun through the air glinting as it fell, still filming video.

The Sky. The Ground. The Sky. The Ground.

It fell into the middle of a patch of bush near a station, striking a large tree and bouncing off a sleeping possum on its way down through its branches. It was still filming when it hit the ground.

The possum was rather startled at first and then became very angry. It looked round for something to vent its anger on and spied a tree surgeon who happened to be working only a few feet away up the same tree.

The camera captured a muffled yell and then filmed the rapidly approaching figure of the tree surgeon as he fell out of the tree and landed beside the camera with a loud thud.

The possum continued to complain loudly for a while and then went back to sleep.

It was several hours before the station manager found the unconscious tree surgeon.

“Aww, mate! What the hell happened to you?”

It was only later in hospital that the tree surgeon realised that he had in his possession a sports camera that didn’t belong to him.

It wasn’t until he got home that he had the chance to download the footage.

He rang his mates. “You gotta come over and have a beer and watch this.”

Everyone agreed that the footage from the air was brilliant and the fall from the tree hilarious. However, the beginning of the reel was the most intriguing of all.

“Hey, mate, I wonder if we can find John and Suki on Facebook and invite them over?”

“It cannot be true,” said George, handing his friend the postcard.

Giorgio started to laugh.

“Your friend Mark is making it up.”

“He swears it’s a true story.”

“The camera from the plane I believe. The possum and the tree surgeon I believe, but together no.”

“Giorgio, I’ve got the video on my laptop. Do you want to see it?”
