Family Waze

“It was a perfect marriage. He didn’t want to. And she couldn’t.”

Spike Milligan

“It was an imperfect perfect marriage. Neither were able to.”

Mabel

“Families! Who needs Families?” – When Mabel has glass in hand; some of it will inevitably spill on the table cloth. – “Surely, you know where you are going in life, so why do you need families to stick their fat noses in?” – Though, I do not disagree, our correspondents beg to differ, having sent various stories on a family-based theme. To my mind, families are not unlike my satnav app. Most of the time you know roughly where you are going, but sometimes it’s really useful to know it agrees with you until it ends up sending you the wrong way. Which call to mind my Uncle Claudius who never listens when you need him to but you can’t ignore. Uncle Claudius has these pearls, or what he calls purlers of wisdom (they are – to borrow his metaphor – steep lessons, headlong falls). Then I ask myself: do I really need them? – I am perfectly capable of falling on my own account. Sigh.
